Peter Thomas
Peter Thomas is a book artist from Santa Cruz, California. He works collaboratively with his partner Donna Thomas, making both edition and one-of-a-kind books. They make the paper, print, illustrate and bind their books, combining the precision of the fine press aesthetic with the structural creativity found in contemporary artists' books. Between 1976 and 1994 Peter and Donna worked with poet and fine press printer William Everson, first as apprentices at the Lime Kiln Press, and later printing two books of Everson’s poems. In 2006 they walked from San Francisco to Yosemite, retracing the route John Muir had followed in 1868, and in 2010 authored a guide book describing the route published by Poetic Matrix Press. Between 2009-2019 they made four cross-country road trips, traveling in their artistic tiny home on wheels as the "Wandering Book Artists,” teaching classes and giving talks about the book arts as they visited university and community-based book arts centers around the country. They are authors of More Making Books by Hand, and editors of 1000 Artists’ Books, both published by Quarry Books. In 2021 The Legacy Press published a descriptive bibliography of their work: Peter and Donna Thomas: Bibliography, 1974–2020, listing over 500 books that they have made during their careers.
